The Basics

Peacebuilding Starts at Home

The title almost says it all. The United States is in trouble. Building a more peaceful society is one way out of our problems. But only if we think of peace as a verb, as something we all do, that addresses all of our problems, not “just” polarization and (the threat of) violence.

If we change the way we think and act in dealing with the so-called wicked problems of the twenty-first century, we can begin to turn things around.

Charles (Chip) Hauss

Has been an activist, author, and educator for more than half a century. He has been Senior Fellow for Innovation and an emeritus member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Peacebuilding since 2005. During that time, he has helped leads its efforts to build peace here at home of which this book is a part.

Hauss also spent more than thirty years as a college professor. Although he focused his efforts and energies on the classroom, he is the author of eighteen other books in peace studies and comparative politics

Chapter Overviews

In the weeks before the book was published, I wrote blog posts summarizing each of the eight chaptesr. You can read them here by clicking  eitherthe title or  image for the chapter you are interested in.

A Really Cool Podcast

On a whim, Chip asked Notebook LM to make a podcast of the book. He was surprised and delighted at how good  a job its AI did in summarizing its themes, both intellectually and emotionally. In less than half an hour. If you need to be convinced about either the book or the potential uses of AI, check it out.

Study and Reading Group Guide

Perhaps because Chip spent much of his career writing college textbooks and even more time in the classroom, each chapter has built-in questions for readers to think about that lead to action steps they can take.

Talk To Chip

As a veteran author, Chip knows that he doesn’t know anything about his readers.

That’s a problem when a book is designed to convince his readers to go about and beyond read his pages but actually build peace wherever and however they can.

So, he would love to hear from you–whether you have read the book or not.
